There’s no one to blame but yourself for missing class
Video games are the reason for students struggles in school as much as food is to blame for peoples weight issues. College often is a persons first taste of freedom (loads of free time) from parental ...

State view: Access to details would make local government budgets easier to trim
Last week I wrote a letter to the lawmakers who sponsored a great idea that was included in the tax omnibus bill vetoed by Gov. Mark Dayton last week. The great idea was requiring cities — and, I hope, all units of government, including school boards, eventually — to post four years of budgets by expenditure type on their websites.By Kim Crockett , May 23, 2012
Local view: We must be willing to confront mental illness
We’re in the middle of May, and you know what that means. OK, yes, fishing, with last weekend’s opener, and also the long grip of winter finally fading into spring. I enjoy these things as much as anyone, but they’re not my purpose for writing. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, and that brings a passion to me that is just as strong as anything spring has to offer.By Patrick Grundmeier , May 21, 2012
Local view: UMD should take over Old Central
Duluth’s glorious Old Central is a Romanesque masterpiece listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Her 230-foot clock tower pierces the Northland sky with bells that rival the chimes of “Big Ben” in London.

LocaL view: Free market health-care plans will not work for Medicare
I recently received a letter from U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack reaffirming his commitment to “save Medicare,” by which he apparently means ending it as a

Local view: ‘Self-made’ individuals owe their good fortune to many
“Self-made.” We’ve heard it claimed, without reservation — and arrogantly, in my opinion — from individuals with large egos. Men, usually, make the brag. They point our how they, all on their own, are responsible for their substantial financial or professional success.

Local view: Duffy bill shows GOP health plan
Congressman Sean Duffy in Wisconsin has submitted a bill to the U.S. House that could reveal the Republicans’ plan to repeal and to replace President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, or ACA.By Donald E. Maypole , May 10, 2012
In response: Obama’s ACA plan a meaningful first step to improving health care
I disagreed with a statement made by a Duluth physician, Dr. Patrick Hall, as published in a Local View commentary in the News Tribune on April 20 regarding the Affordable Care Act, or ACA (Local View: “Law could have serious effect on cost, quality and accessibility of health care”).By Dr. Alan Peterson , May 10, 2012
New developments offer promise, but city must strive for excellence
I long have advocated for a university district. And now, with the old Woodland school site set to become the cornerstone of Bluestone Commons, Duluth stands to see its first,By Doug Pazienza , May 09, 2012
Local view: ELCA position on marriage respects diversity and a love of neighbors
Members from the Northeastern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America met in assembly April 27-29 to be encouraged in our mission and ministries together. Our theme was the “Marks of Discipleship,” the ancient practices of the Christian life: prayer, Scripture study, encouragement, worship, serving beyond the congregation, giving and inviting. There were about 350 voting members present from more than 130 congregations. Our synod has a membership of 69,000 and is part of a 4.2 million-member church.

A judge's view: Schools, courts can’t solve truancy problem without parents
Yesterday I had my regular child-protection calendar. Of the 16 scheduled cases, seven were based on truancy petitions. How can more than a third of a particular docket be truancy cases? It may start with a middle school student skipping a class and then another class and another class. Soon, it’s easier to not go to school or not attend a class and “run the halls.”

Local view: Funding youth intervention is fiscally responsible
As director of the Truancy Action Project and Student Attendance Review Board for Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, I know how crucial youth intervention services are. The project, review board and Lutheran Social Service provide a continuum of prevention and early intervention services with the goal of improving attendance and keeping kids in school. By working cooperatively with students, families, schools, the courts and other community agencies, we are able to identify barriers to regular school attendance, remove these barriers and help students improve attendance.

Local view: Small firms must plan for recessions
Even though the Great Recession officially is over, the near-term future of the economy continues to show signs of an L-shaped, prolonged downturn with little growth. This trend has left most companies around the world with reduced organizational resources, scaled-down processes and reduced demand for output.By Rajat Panwar , May 02, 2012
