With hockey safety a hot topic in Minnesota this winter, four Proctor High School students have created a social media campaign to help spread a message of “think before you hit” to players.

Juniors Rachel Miller-Shaked and Jenna Peterson, and sophomores Brooke Huberty and Hannah Dahlgren — all members of the school’s DECA chapter — organized the campaign in the wake of the much-publicized, serious injuries suffered by Minnesota prep hockey players Jack Jablonski, who was hurt after being checked from behind and into the boards, and Jenna Privette, who was injured crashing into the boards.

The four students created a video featuring Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey player Keegan Flaherty and UMD women’s hockey player Emma Stauber, who both are from Duluth. The theme of the video is “What One Hit Could Do,” and Miller-Shaked said the goal of the video, available on YouTube, is to direct people to the campaign’s Facebook and Twitter pages — where information and statistics about hockey safety and injuries will be posted.

Miller-Shaked said the goal of the campaign isn’t to change hockey rules or the game itself, but instead to get players to think before they make hits during a game.
